"City Flâneur: Social Documentary Photography"

Hong Kong Heritage Museum
20 June 2010 - 3 January 2011

"Hong Kong Photography Series" Exhibition 2

Hong Kong Heritage Museum 10th Anniversary Programme

The ever-changing landscape of urban spaces and social phenomena that are part and parcel of city life are popular subjects among photographers. Capturing these transforming images on film, an eclectic group of lensmen and women have given impetus to the art of social landscapes within the tradition of documentary photography. Like flâneurs (city wanderers) in other genres, they focus their cameras on social vistas related to travel and living and, through the images they capture, reflect upon the causes of change in the community and its environs, sometimes even offering their own commentary and critique.

Our three guest curators for this exhibition – seasoned photographer and educator Joseph Hon-kee Fung, Blues Kai-yu Wong, co-founder of the pH5 Photo Group, and Wong Suk-ki, lecturer at the Academy of Visual Arts of the Hong Kong Baptist University – have selected some 260 works, dating from the 1950s to the present day, by 35 groups of artists to showcase social landscape photography at its most poignant and powerful. Presented under the themes of Street Photography, Social Documentary Photography, New Topographics Photography, Conceptual and Manipulated Photography, these images epitomise the development of contemporary documentary photography in Hong Kong.
